Course Outline for STEM Explorer (Grade 1)

Duration

32 Weeks (1 academic year)


Overview

STEM lessons are designed to enhance student’s learning outcomes in such disciplines as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics by way of “learning by doing” method. Students will explore real-life problems and they are expected to provide solutions to solve them every 8-week cycle. Problem solving skills; critical thinking; group experience; collaborative learning, and English language skills are embedded within each lesson.

Studies have shown students who have enrolled in STEM lessons have increased their test scores dramatically versus students without STEM exposure. After 32 weeks, students are on track to have a deeper understanding and have the confidence to state that "I think I can be an engineer or a scientist."

Our program is designed by our partners Pinellas County Schools and University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP). Our teachers are STEM trained by our partners. At AmericanSTEM, we follow the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS - www.nextgenscience.org).

Module Description

Waves and their Applications in Technologies for information transfer

Learning the basic concepts of algorithm and events

Introduction to computer science, learning the basic concepts of sequences and loops

Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking plants and/or animals

Create a tool that will help classrooms communicate with one another.

Design a presentation that can be used in the children’s museum to teach visitors about how humans can learn from observing plants and/or animals.

 

Learning Outcomes

Below are the expected learning outcomes for the 32-week-program to each STEM module assigned to grade specific.

  • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) are tailored per grade specific.
  • Identify that engineers create things to solve real-world problems.
  • Identify the steps of the Engineering Design Process
  • Explain why conducting research is an important part of the Engineering Design Process.
  • Explain why brainstorming ideas and choosing the best ideas are important parts of the Engineering Design Process.
  • Explain why building a model and testing those models are important parts of the Engineering Design Process.
  • Use tools and/or materials to design and build a device that solves a specific problem.
  • Explain why redesigning and evaluating are important parts of the Engineering Design Process.
  • Explain why communication of results and presentation of those results are important parts of the Engineering Design Process.
  • Compare and contrast multiple solutions to a problem.
  • Use academic vocabulary (English & Vietnamese) in the context of learning.
